Five of the most unusual wine tastings

13 November, 2023

When you come to South Africa, you begin to wonder about everything around you. Africa, Europe and the East swirl in one dance of traditions, events and cultures. Is there anything that can bring people together better than alcohol?

We’ll leave this rhetorical question and move straight on to “wine tasting” which is the favourite activity of South Africans when they want to celebrate a life occasion. This is precisely why many tourists from all over the world come to the very edge of Africa: to enjoy some of the best wines, and even at ridiculously low prices.

What is the process of wine tasting? A waiter comes up to your table with a beaming smile and some glasses (usually 4, 5, 6 or more – depending on the degree of intoxication, that you are trying to achieve 😁). He brings the guests up to date and pours the long-awaited drink. You can’t wait to take a sip, but first, you need to listen to what notes of flavour and shades from the wine you can expect. This is where the imagination begins!

You can find an article about wine tastings on our portal in the “wine farms” section, but today we will talk about wine paired with certain products. We all know that wine goes great with cheese and fruit, but for South Africans that must be a thing of the past. After all, how did they come up with the idea of serving ice cream with wine? Or cheesecake? Or, after all, a fynbos bush?

In this article, we have collected the TOP 5 unusual wine tastings.

Canto Wines

An underrated area from a tourist point of view is Durbanville. At this little-known wine boutique by Marinus Neethling, you can try the signature MCC (method cap classique, popularly known as champagne) paired with stunningly crispy macarons filled with hazelnut, red velvet, turkish delight and salted caramel. However, you can exclude the wine in this pairing.

Only if it’s not 4 fruit sorbets and 2 ice creams (one of which tastes like a traditional South African dessert) or milk tart as an addition to the famous brand of wine in the world of wine lovers.

Bartinney Wine estate

Today’s rating is topped by a farm with incredible views of the Banhoek Mountain valley.
