Peregrine Farm Stall

Situated on the N2 in the Elgin Valley, it is a very popular farm stall, attracting a lot of locals on day trips and can get rather busy over the weekends. This Farm Stall won Cape Town’s KFM Radio Best Farm Stall Award this year (2023). Peregrine was established in the 1960s and named after a heritage peach. They offer locally sourced artisanal foods, fynbos honey, pressed juices and fresh produce. The artisanal bread, quiches and pies are freshly made in small batches throughout the day to ensure freshness. You can expect to find the tastiest Waterblommetjie (water flowers that are edible) pies, Ouma Brood, Raisin Bread, Rye Bread, Banana Bread and Mosbolletjies. They stock some of the provinces’ top wines and craft beers. They are committed to sustainability and use biodegradable coffee cups that later became plant pots for indigenous Elgin Fynbos. Therefore, they ask that you dispose of your cup in one of the two large coffee-shaped bins on the premises. They also have a bus shop selling leather items and a book shop that looks like a little magical wonderland castle. Remember to use Debit/Credit cards, Masterpass, or Snapscan for payments as they don’t accept cash.

Rietdakkie Padstal

Rietdakkie which is Afrikaans for “Thatched Roof”, has a beautiful heartwarming origin story. It is owned by a family who in the 1980s were farmers and grew vegetables. The farmer would stock a wagon full of vegetables and sell it next to the road. As time went on, they would gradually expand and the farmer’s wife started making homemade baked goods to sell with the vegetables. They built the Rietdakkie a few years later and now operate in this cosy building. They stock what is in season, giving back to the community and supporting the local farmers from the Breede River Valley. They have a Farm Style kitchen serving coffee, baked goods and some very popular roosterkoeke (bread baked on a gridiron over a fire). Children have their own enclosed area to play, making it a family-friendly destination.
