Mafia Island and the Marine Park in Tanzania

12 April, 2024

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit an island that most people do not know exists and is completely off the beaten track? We have the best getaway for you, the Mafia Island.

The Mafia Island has untouched sandbars, whale sharks, turtles that are nesting, abundant friendly locals and only a few tourists roaming around. The atmosphere is peaceful. The island consists of almost half of the coastline and is the largest protected area in the Indian Ocean, forming the ‘Mafia Island Marine Park’, which is full of coral reefs, mangrove forests and lagoons.

The Weather

You can expect a tropical climate, the rainy season is mostly from March to May. The dry season is between July and October.

Mafia Island has so much to offer! It has spectacular beaches and friendly locals. You even have the opportunity to swim with whale sharks, see humpback whales and spot nesting turtles. The crime rates on the island are relatively low.

Marine Park

The Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 to protect the archipelago’s reefs, which are a very valuable resource in this isolated area. It is one of the best diving spots in Tanzania. You will be able to see rainbow-coloured clownfish, octopus, sting rays, sharks and dolphins.

How to get to the island

The easiest and most convenient way is to fly into Dar es Salaam and from there get a flight to the Mafia Islands. The alternative option is to take a ferry from Dar es Salaam, which can take much longer and the ferry only operates on certain days and hours. Once at Mafia’s airport, you will notice that it’s a very small airport and the locals live a very relaxed day-to-day life.

Accommodation

Mafia Island is very small and consists of two areas: Killidoni, the capital of Mafia and Utende, which is based in the Marine Park.

Kiliddoni has a lot of locals, with barely any mainstream restaurants or accommodation options, which will allow you to experience an authentic side of the island. Everything is within walking distance. You can also make use of the Tuk-Tuks on the island to get around.

If you are planning to stay in Utende in the Marine Park, you would need to pay a $23.50 (21.64 Euro) per day fee before entering. Utende has a wider range of accommodation lodges to choose from and also more restaurant options.

There is a wide variety of activities to do on the island. Here are a few that we highly recommend:

  • Visit Chole Island and see the lighthouse.
  • Scuba diving during the whole year.
  • Snorkelling in Utende, the Marine Park offers amazing experiences.
  • Looking for whales and sharks can be done through the snorkelling or diving tours. The best times for sightings of Humpback whales are between late August to early October and Whalesharks are between November to March.

  • Do an Island walking tour with local guides.

Our editor’s at Belloc’s favourite tips

  • Visit the market in Kilidoni, where you can buy souvenirs, like tablecloths with traditional African colours and patterns or little crafts.
  • Make sure that you pack all your necessary toiletries, there are not many options available on the island.
  • Bring extra sunscreen for the African sun.
  • Pack comfortable, light clothing and sandals for walking around.
  • It is advised to not hand out any money or food to the children who beg on the island, as they tend to hassle you for more. We recommend that you rather donate the money to charity in the area.
  • Don’t be afraid to mingle and get to know the residents. They can give you an incredible insight into living the island life, their culture and cuisine.
