Tuna can vary in weight, size, taste and colour. In Cape Town waters, you’ll encounter four main types of tuna:

Skipjack (smallest)

These are the smallest and most ample of the tuna species, making up 58% of the world’s tuna population. Their bodies are mostly without scales and their backs have a dark purple/blue colour with a silver belly. Their name is derived from their behaviour, which is characterised by their ability to leap across the ocean surface. The larger schools of adult skipjack tuna are known to mix with the younger yellowfin and bigeye tuna.

Longfin (weighing from 7 to 30kg)

Also known as the Albacore, these tuna are being fished sustainably during both the summer and winter months. They can be identified by their long pectoral fins and bodies featuring a deep blue colour with shades of white silver.

Yellowfin (weighing from 15 to 100kg)

Yellowfin are the most common species around the Southern Cape Coast, particularly during the warmer summer months. They are big fish that can swim at extremely high speeds. In some areas, dolphins and full-grown yellowfin tuna will swim together.

Big Eye (weighing from 45 to 120kg)

Big Eye are deemed the strongest fighting fish and the largest tuna found around the deep waters of the Southern Coast. They can swim the deepest of the four types and have a thicker layer of fat to insulate them from these colder water. These features are what make them the most sought-after type for preparing sashimi sushi.
