Flora and fauna
The park is home to floodplains, woodlands and savannas, making it a haven for a wide range of plant and animal species. The park’s flora and fauna are interconnected, with plants providing food and shelter for animals, while animals help to disperse seeds and fertilize the soil. This delicate balance is essential for maintaining the park’s biodiversity.
One of the main attractions is the large population of elephants, estimated to be around 120,000. They gather near the Chobe River to drink and cool off during the hot summer months. The river is a vital water source for the Park’s inhabitants, attracting large herds of buffalo, giraffes, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras and other animals.
Chobe National Park has over 450 bird species recorded within its boundaries. From majestic raptors like African fish eagles and martial eagles to colourful bee-eaters and kingfishers, the Park offers endless opportunities for bird enthusiasts to observe and photograph a wide variety of avian species.
The Park’s vegetation ranges from dense riverine forests along the Chobe River to open grasslands and mopane woodlands further inland. These diverse habitats support a wide array of plant life, including towering baobab trees, colourful wildflowers, and succulent plants adapted to the arid conditions.
Ways of exploration
Boat cruises along the Chobe River offer visitors a unique perspective on the wildlife and excellent opportunities for photography. It is also a popular spot for fishing, with tigerfish and bream abundant in its waters.
For those looking to explore the park on land, there are several game drive options available. Guided tours in open safari vehicles provide you with the chance to see animals in their natural habitat and learn about the park from knowledgeable guides. You can also take guided walking safaris to see the park on foot and gain a deeper understanding of its ecosystems. Birdwatching is another popular activity in the park, with over 450 bird species. Self-drive options are also available for those who prefer to explore at their own pace.
Besides its wildlife, Chobe National Park is also known for its stunning landscapes. The Savuti Marsh, located in the western part of the park, is a vast open grassland that is home to a variety of animals, including elephants, zebras, and wildebeest. The Linyanti Marsh, in the north, is another popular area for game viewing and is known for its large herds of buffalo and elephants.
